FAQ

PARENTS

Do I attend counselling with my child/teenager?

Parent’s are invited to accompany their adolescent to the initial session in order that I can gain a full picture of what issues are causing distress to their child. This is also a good time for parent’s to express their concerns in regards to their child and receive support from me. As adolescents grow up as part of a family sometimes a parent may be included in the counselling process depending on the issue.

Will I be told what my child/teenager is talking about?

Whatever your teenager and I discuss is confidential. This means I cannot share any information without the permission of your teenager. However, there are some exceptions to this rule:

If I have reason to believe that a child has been physically, sexually, or emotionally abused, or has experienced neglect. If I have reason to believe that they might seriously harm themselves or someone else. If a court order or other legalisation legally requires me to provide information.

Any information shared will be done in a collaborative process including your child and with their permission.

Why shouldn’t my child/teenager just take medication?

Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed, sometimes counselling is needed, and sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counselling.

How long will it take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general questions page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them. The length of time counselling takes depends on your teenager’s desire for personal development, their commitment, and the factors that are driving them to seek counselling in the first place.
